My Story - Rebecca Fitzsimmons

I think a little part of us never really grows up. It's the part that still wonders what might be hiding behind the skirting board, the one that remembers muddy knees and daisy chains, and the one that can look at an ordinary biscuit and imagine it being an enormous feast for someone very small.

That is the little world behind my illustrations.

​

My name is Rebecca, a coloured pencil artist living in the Scottish Borders, where I create illustrations of tiny mice getting themselves into all sorts of adventures. They gather flowers, discover enormous sweets, nibble biscuits they probably shouldn't, celebrate birthdays, fall in love and generally find a surprising amount of magic in very ordinary things.

I have drawn for as long as I can remember. As a child, I was forever daydreaming, making things and disappearing into my imagination. Growing up didn't quite cure me of it - thank goodness!

​

My creative path has taken a few turns along the way. I spent ten years working as a tattoo artist before eventually returning to the Scottish Borders in search of a more peaceful life. Somewhere amongst the countryside, pencils and slower days, these little mice began to appear.

​

I create these illustrations using coloured pencils and fine-line pens, building their world from the small things that make life feel special; a favourite sweet, a familiar flower, a fond memory, a birthday remembered, a cup of tea or tiny moments shared with someone that you love.

​

Perhaps that is why the mice mean so much to me. Their world is small, but their adventures are so much bigger. 

​

I hope when one of them finds its way into your home, it reminds you of something too; childhood afternoons, favourite stories, people you love, or simply that feeling we had when we were little, when the world seemed enormous and there was magic to be found almost anywhere.​​
